What Is CNC? How CNC Machines Work and Where They Are Used

CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. A CNC machine performs movements and operations according to a prepared digital program, allowing components to be manufactured accurately and repeatedly with less manual intervention.

How does a CNC machine work?

The operator first creates or imports a digital design. CAD/CAM software is then used to prepare toolpaths and machining parameters.

The resulting CNC program contains commands for axis movements, feed rates, spindle speed, tool changing and other functions. The CNC controller processes these commands and coordinates the machine.

Basic CNC workflow

  1. Create or import the design.

  2. Prepare toolpaths in CAM software.

  3. Select the cutter and cutting parameters.

  4. Secure and align the material.

  5. Set the work zero point.

  6. Check and start the CNC program.

  7. Inspect the completed part.

Correct program preparation, tooling and workholding remain essential even when the machining process is automated.
